Are you frustrated by the pace of connectivity improvements? For how many years has (small) business been stuck with SDSL for affordable connectivity?

SHDSL was supposed to supplant SDSL as of 2003 (or so) I thought, but I never see advertised speeds go beyond a 1.5 Mbps SDSL line... SHDSL goes to 2.3 Mbps and has other advantages over SDSL (longer loop lengths for given speeds, less interference with other data lines, 4-wire mode). I'm not that well educated on the topic, but I also had the impression there could be some cost savings.

Today T1's are often delivered using this technology, but why not offer SHDSL from the customer to DSLAM like a normal dedicated DSL line.... and give customers the speed they want, distance depending???

Are ISPs just not ready to upgrade their DSLAM equipment, or don't want to cannibalize their higher priced bonded T1 services?

You may not need the SLA of a real T1, but you'd sure love 2.3 Mbps up and down for let's say $150/mo or so.

First.... you have to look at who is selling SDSL. Basically Covad and a few small CLECs. They bought non-standards-based SDSL long ago and they are still using the equipment.

Given the financial state of Covad I can see why they aren't going around ripping out all their DSLAMs.

There may be some hope though, with the new Earthlink money they are upgrading DSLAMs to support LPV and ADSL2 in larger markets. I *think* that the new DSLAMs will also be offering new SDSL speeds as well, which probably means SHDSL (and finally the ability to hook a real router up to an SDSL line).

Most DS-1s today are delivered using either HDSL or HDSL2 on 1 or 2 pairs.

Your ILECs aren't going to upgrade equipment necessarily because of the availability of a different technology. Even with existing technology many consumers and businesses are in a fight just to be able to get ADSL services.

Covad, XO, etc. that are selling SDSL services already may not upgrade given their investment in existing equipment.... and given the state of competition now for internet services.

With the price of service dropping to $12.99/mo and the uptake of those discounted services increasing, I wouldn't want to be one of the other players and be making large capital expenditures for upgrades right now. I'd be worried about staying in business. People are price driven.....

Just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth.

"Kao-Ya" Innovation and Chinese VAS Market - Insider's View

"Kao-Ya", as they say it in Chinese, or "Peking Duck", is a beautiful and delicious dish, a roasted duck with especially tender and crispy skin. The legends trace its history to the Qing Dynasty in China. To prepare "Kao-Ya" you need a full duck with its head attached. Then, if you are strong enough, you need to inflate it through a straw (that's how they did it centuries ago) or use a pump to separate the duck skin from the body. After that you have to pour some boiled water and brush it on with some sweet substance, like molasses, honey, or plum syrup depending on your preferences. That allows the duck skin to acquire the light caramel taste. After drying it for about 12 hours, place it in a large oven to roast it over apple wood charcoal (the best choice!) for a couple of hours, and finally you will have a crispy and tasty Chinese delicacy. (Now don't try to do it in your home oven, you will need to build a special traditional oven for that!)

While wrapping finely sliced duck pieces into pancake, and mixing them with a plum sauce, I want to introduce you to Ben Joffe, CEO of Plus Eight Star Ltd. With seven years of Asian experience and fluent in Mandarin and Japanese, Ben is very confident about his company's future. When I asked him if he was interested in new clients, he quickly said "sorry, not for a few months, we are completely booked with a number of projects". Nevertheless, he still finds time in his busy schedule to organize highly popular "Mobile Monday" (www.mobilemonday.cn) events in Beijing, which gather enormous crowds of "mo-co" people, operators, software developers, journalists and bloggers. Over the dinner we discussed some peculiarities of doing business in the mobile content sector in China, the secret life of Chinese content providers and many fruitless attempts to enter this market by some Western companies. My "whys" and "hows" were answered with patience and good humor, while "Kao-Ya" quickly disappeared just to be replaced by a nice Chinese ice cream. Finally I asked Ben to respond to some of my questions regarding the VAS market in China, and you can find his answers below. In short, his recipe for success is working with a local partner and tuning in to the local culture and preferences.

Current state of the VAS market in China. What are the hottest trends?

AG: Ben, what are some innovative technologies that Chinese CPs use to engage new subscribers?

Ben: The current state of the VAS market in China is both great and terrible: Great because it's growing overall at a fast pace: 20% of China Mobile's ARPU comes from data, also the mobile content market was estimated close to 1 billion USD in 2006 and keeps growing.

Now, it's terrible because the market is very opaque: operators' regulations keep changing and rocking the life of the thousands of VAS service providers in China. Also, most of the offer is rather commoditized (ringtones, screensavers, ringback tones, SMS jokes) so it is very hard for them to differentiate. Also, operators tend to develop their own service every time they see a service is picking up: mobile music, mobile IM, etc. So life for local mobile entrepreneurs can be fairly depressing as China Mobile reaps the rewards of SP's market building efforts. Very few foreign companies dared to enter the market (only 6 officially have a VAS license) and apart from major record companies, none is really making money in China.

All hope is not lost, as many companies now concentrate on the off-portal market, with advertising models or cross-media cooperation. In China, technology is not the key. Smart combination of ideas and proper execution are way more critical.

AG: What are the top Chinese CPs? What are their strengths?

Ben: Top 8 ones are easy to list as they are also listed on NASDAQ or HKSE:

- Tom Online: leading VAS SP, they entered JVs with Skype and eBay. None is really delivering much, though.

- KongZhong: top WAP provider. Trying hard to push its independent mobile portal, Kong.net via offline advertising (on bus, billboards, etc.). Not much result yet.

- Linktone: partners with record labels and brands. Had a lot of changes in top management and no clear direction at the moment.

- Hurray: moving up the music value chain by purchasing record labels. Its strategy might pay off if they don't damage those companies and integrate with mobile VAS for monetization.

- Sina: leading Internet portal. Makes money also through mobile services.

-Sohu: #2 Internet portal. Official partner for Beijing Olympics 2008. Not clear yet what kind of results it will bring.

- Tencent: leading IM service in China called QQ. Hundreds of millions of registered users. Monetizes through a healthy personalization model and casual games. A very good and healthy company that is almost a new media by itself.

- Netease: dropped most of its VAS activities to concentrate on online RPG and casual games. Doing pretty well since then and its top management probably sleeps much better. Most VAS companies do not manage to differentiate or monetize properly yet.

AG: China Mobile and VAS: what are some examples of interesting VAS campaigns?

Ben: China Mobile do not really focus much of its marketing on VAS. We are still in a fairly unsophisticated market where people buy hardware...

AG: China Unicom: how does it BREW its stuff?

Ben: China Unicom has difficulties getting traction with BREW. Also, the future of CDMA as a whole is a bit unclear in China. SK Telecom (Korea's leading operator) invested 1 billion USD in bonds and is building some cooperation, but overall the market creation effort around mobile services is insufficient.

AG: Internet market in China: major trends

Ben: Internet in China is still a lot about page views and number of subscribers. Most of the US-based services have been adapted to China ('Copy-to-China' or C2C) but very few actually deliver the same results as the online advertising market is still small.

There is a web 2.0 and online communities fever, and a lot of venture capital fueling it, but I don't see so many profitable companies around. Some interesting sectors such as online travel or online real estate are doing well, though.

Online video you-tube-like services are still largely a money-wasting area. Last, the user-generated content trend is definitely here to stay: from online karaoke to video creations, a few artists actually came out from the Internet in the past 2 years.

AG: What is so unique about your company? How can you help Russian CPs or techno companies in China and Asia?

Ben: We do 'Innovation arbitrage', meaning we help companies operating in foreign markets to understand why and how leaders in Japan, Korea and China became successful. Especially, we go beyond the cultural layer to highlight fundamentally good ideas and the way to implement them in other markets. As of today, there is little room for foreign CPs in China and Korea, but top-notch technology companies might stand a chance. In Japan, high quality content also has opportunities and the market is much more transparent.

Unfortunately, starting cost is much higher. I believe however we bring a lot of value to our customers when we bring them ideas that work from Japan, Korea or China, to improve their business in their home market.

AG: What is the secret of your success?

Ben: I spent over 7 years in Asia. First in Japan, then Korea and now China.

What I noticed is that:

(1) Very little of what happens in those countries, including their most incredible successes, is known outside;

(2) Most reporting about those countries will tell you maybe the result but not the process and will often explain them with cultural reasons. The problem is that if you say "it works because they are [whatever country]" you stop thinking and will likely fail to see how a good idea could be adapted to your own market.

This has happened repeatedly over time: from text messaging to camera phones, to flip-phones, to ringtones, etc. The West eventually 'rediscovers' those ideas much later and then forgets the whole cultural debate. Such attitude cost Nokia a lot of market share as they could not see the good idea behind flip-phone design and stuck to their 'candybar' for too long.

Eventually, I think the key of our work - aside from our talented multicultural team - is our cross-cultural and cross-market expertise. Something that takes quite a bit of time to develop.

Broadband - Location Matters

You've probably not given much thought to who owns what in your local telephone exchange but unknown to many of us; broadband providers have added their own equipment into your local BT exchange. This direct access enables them to give their customers many different services and reduce cost.

So, what does this mean to the average consumer?

Well a few years ago, when signing up to broadband deals, you would be effectively running solely on BT's wholesale network branded as another supplier. BT sells these services via their wholesale arm and internet service providers (ISPs) go on to brand and manage the services on their own.

Times have now changed and regulator Ofcom has set in place something known within the industry as "Local Loop Unbundling" or LLU. This means that broadband providers can bypass the BT network and install their own equipment in your local exchange.

You may think of this as good news, potentially reducing the cost of your broadband connection but unfortunately this isn't always the case and has led to different prices for broadband in different areas and also huge differences in quality of service.

The majority of complaints about pricing and poor service come from people living in rural areas because providers have rolled out their LLU networks in urban areas where they can cover the widest number of people in the UK and also control cost, (i.e. it's more cost effective to have LLU in urban areas as they can maximise the number of potential customers and maximise revenue).

The likes of AOL and Talk Talk (Both owned by Carphone Warehouse), Tiscali and UK Online are charging over the odds to customers outside of their LLU network and this is usually in rural parts of the country.

Other providers such as Orange and Pipex have chosen to take a different route and are winning customers by choosing not to pass this charge onto their customers.

With the difference of around £10 per month, it's not wonder customers are up in arms and worth checking to see if you're affected before choosing your new provider.

The Advancements of Mobile GPS Technology

Even though today's GPS technology doesn't require a great deal of space, the software that allows the device to function does. Once software, is created, it gets improved upon and will get smaller. All of the functions that come with the GPS device aren't needed by every consumer.

A GPS unit really only requires a radio emitter and a clock to work. The emitter sends the time reading of the clock to a overhead satellite. Then the satellite calculates the amount of time that it took for the radio signal to reach it, and then the satellite calculates the distance from this information. Three or four satellites will compare their locations with the amount of time that it took the signal to reach them. This is how they are able to determine your location.

If the GPS device is transmitting your location to a third party, the GPS unit will be small enough to clip to a pet's collar or fit inside of a cell phone. Thanks to the technological advancements in GPS devices, an expensive watch virtually impossible to steal.

The portability of a mobile GPS unit allows consumers to use them in a variety of different ways. Besides plotting navigation or tracking objects and living things, these devices can use the data as information for a variety of different applications. Recently, small digital cameras with GPS units installed in them are being sold to consumers. These cameras keep track of places where pictures were taken, and they can be used to create digital maps using the photos that were taken to mark locations.

Though they are larger, laptops are just as portable as mobile GPS devices. A GPS device can easily be attached to a laptops with a USB cable. A laptop with a GPS unit attached to it can be used in a car to navigate a route, and store the information for business report later on.

Bandwidth 101 - Understanding Loop - Port - And More

Here's the scenario....you're in need of increased bandwidth to meet your business voice and/or data applications. You're targeting T1 or DS3 as your solution...without a router (let's say you already have one or will get one seperate from the bandwidth provider).

Before you go out and jump at the first "attractive" business bandwidth offer you see.....there's a few things you need to understand. Particularly the terms Loop and Port....as well as "dedicated" and "shared" connections. Otherwise....you risk paying more for something you don't really need. Or worse yet....paying less for something that doesn't do what you must have.

So here we go....now pay attention and take notes.

Loop is the connection from your building to the provider's interface point, which is usually the main central office for your region, not necessarily the local central office.

Port is the actual connection to the internet backbone.

If your equipment was in the provider's data center, you would not need loop, but there will always be a port.

If your price quotes vary wildly, most likely you are running up against the "shared" vs "dedicated" issue. a "dedicated" connection (usually quoted by Tier I providers like AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Qwest, Savvis) will get you the full bandwidth to the internet backbone. A "shared" connection will get you full bandwidth to the carrier's interface point, from which they buy a big connection to their Tier I carrier.

An example, they buy a T3 (aka DS3) which consists of 28 T1 connections. Then they sell 60 T1 connections, recognizing that not all users will be requiring their full bandwidth at any particular time. Kind of like the old AOL issues of them having 1 modem for every 12 customers, and then having to buy more modems as customers complained about busy signals.

The issue of "shared" connections is a lively issue. You might trek over to the BroadbandReports.com forum for Wireless Internet Providers where you will see several discussions about how many customers can be supported by a link of a certain size.

If you are hosting a web site at your location, or if you are running a real time application and need absolute time sensitive responses to your internet queries, then you want to pony up to pay for the dedicated connection.

Another issue affecting your price would be how long is the loop from your central office to the carrier's interface point. Assuming that you're in Rancho Santa Fe CA (for example), a carrier requiring a loop all the way to Los Angeles would have a higher cost (and thus a higher price), than a carrier with an interface point in San Diego.

As for any questions about IP addresses, and e-mails:

Most Tier 1 providers will give you up to a class C (256) Block at no charge with justification. Plenty of IP address coverage for whatever your application.

Email, is almost a none issue with T1 service, as most people buying a T1 don't need ISP Email's. But if you do need them, find the best offer. However most providers consider email a free service.

There you go. Now you're armed with a priceless education. That should translate to smart price shopping.

How To Buy The Satellite TV Equipment To Watch English Channels Such As BBC, ITV, And Ch4 In Europe

Choosing a Digibox The satellite we are looking for is Astra 2D which is positioned at 28.2° east, has a footprint focused tightly on the British Isles, making reception difficult in large areas of mainland Europe. So the choice of box is important.

The best place to buy a Sky Digibox is from ebay.co.uk. At the moment most people are upgrading to Sky+ and Sky aren't bothering to collect their old boxes, so people are selling them on ebay, where they are going cheap.

Ideally a Grundig GRD310/2 or Panasonic TU-DSB30 (not a 31) box is the best choice or look for old Pace and Grundig boxes which work superbly with low signals.

Buying a viewing card Once again ebay.co.uk is the best place to get a card if you did not get one with the box. There is no difference in the channels you can get on Freeview card compared to an expired Sky viewing card. If you want to watch subscription channels like Sky One then you will need a Sky contract, this requires a UK address and a UK bank account. One very easy way to do this is to get a friend, who has a Sky contract, to order a second box for 'use in their caravan' and then pay them your subscription.

Personally I have never felt the urge to have any Sky channels. Freeview gives you all the BBC TV and radio channels, plus all ITV channels, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

Choosing a satellite dish The only important thing about a dish is the size, other than that, just pop down your local DIY store and you should find a suitable dish. Note that quite often, the shop will assume that you want to watch satellite TV from that country where a small 60/70cm dish will do, this is not the case here.

Look at the Astra 2D footprint map on astra2d.com and determine the size of dish you need. The bigger the better, but as a guide you will need at least an 85cm dish for central France, 1.8m for Southern Spain, 3m for Mainland Greece and 3.5m for Turkey and Cyprus. I use an 85cm dish in the Southern French Alps and it does struggle on the digital only channels like ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4.

The detector is called a Low noise block downconverter ( LNB ) It is the device on the front of a satellite dish that receives the very low level microwave signal from the satellite, amplifies it, changes the signals to a lower frequency band and sends them down the cable to the indoor receiver.

There is nothing special about these and the one that comes with the dish should be fine.

It is possible to buy multi headed LNBs, the popular one being the Quad LNB which has four output cables that can independently feed 4 boxes.

Setting it all up There are usually local companies who will set up your system for you, especially in the 'ex pat hotspots' such as The French Riviera, but with a little patience and a compass you can do it yourself, I'll cover this in a later article.

The Ecommerce Regulations, passed in 2002, require that certain information is listed on a website, including, "where the service provider is registered in a trade or similar register available to the public, details of the register in which the service provider is entered and his registration number, or equivalent means of identification in that register".

That has been understood as including the company registration number and place of registration. The Ecommerce Regulations also required a note of "the geographic address at which the service provider is established" – which many have taken to mean the registered office address.

However, the wording in the Ecommerce Regulations is ambiguous compared to the new provisions. Further, many organisations' sites currently omit the information, perhaps making the mistake of thinking that the Ecommerce Regulations do not apply to websites that do not sell online (in fact they apply to almost all websites).

Will EVDO Knock Satellite Internet Out of the Park?

2007 will be the year that Cell phone providers like Sprint, Alltel and Verizon push strong into Suburban and close-in Rural territory staked out by Satellite Internet operators and attempt to take market share away. Will they succeed?

When EVDO Revision A (and soon thereafter Rev B) comes out in Q3 2007, there will be a full blown skirmish between Cell operators and the Satellite Internet industry for available consumer and business internet accounts. The territories they are trying to claim are the areas where concentration of homes and business is great enough to build out advanced cell service, but not great enough for terrestrial providers like cable and dsl. These suburban and rural areas have historically been the territory for Satellite operators and some adventuresome WiFi businesses.

Current Status:

With the current levels of cell service available (EVDO rev.0), cell operators are taking a fair amount of business away from satellite operators in fringe suburban areas....why?.... younger users who want to stream video, trade music and video, play internet games and not have any limitations on usage. So far, the cell operators are filling the bill for about $50 or so for the "Aircard" and charging about $59 per mo. for high speed internet....well, sort of.

The speeds on most EVDO plans are about 400-800 kbps download and around 200 kbps upload. Much higher speeds are promised when Revisions A and B come in to play later this year and beyond.
Latency is around 200-350 ms - 50% lower or more than a satellite connection. This latency allows gaming without too many bumps along the way. For those who have been experiencing oppressive limitations from the satellite operators, it seems like heaven....but for how long?

Some of the providers already have a limit of usage each month and it's pretty restrictive (as low as 4GB per month - lower than the satellite operators are assessing). There is no decent data to report on what happens when the network begins to "load up" with users. I was in Denver's airport during a recent snow storm and the EVDO service was non-existent until you were several miles from the airport.....so it's not perfect, by any means. I personally believe that the cell operators are going to learn the same lessons that satellite internet operators have learned........bandwidth is expensive! You can lure people in with attractive prices and speeds, but when you can't maintain those speeds as the network loads up, you just become another one of those lying, cheating, false advertising no good internet providers that we have too many of already! Just kidding........it's not easy to balance a high speed internet network in this day and time.

Future:

When cell operators build out and offer Rev B. EVDO high speed internet service (about 2 years out), the landscape for service will be incredibly competitive. City, suburban and rural individuals and companies will have a lot of choices and the providers with foresight and innovation will be the one's to survive. It should be good for the consumer!

But in most countries surveillance of an individual without their explicit consent is against the law. Whether it be monitoring whom you call, the contents of the conversation or your location it is a violation of privacy laws in just about all civilized countries around the world. You either need a law court's permission or that person's documented consent to use a cell phone GPS surveillance device to monitor them. Unfortunately the new technology is being used illegally far to often.

A terrifying example of abuse of cell phone GPS surveillance occurred recently in Oregon in the USA. A wife divorced her husband because he was trying to control everything she did. This type of situation is not unusual. Often the ex-husband will continue to stalk and try to control his ex-wife long after the divorce. In this case everywhere she went he would follow. There was nothing she could do to shake him off night or day. She was justifiably afraid he would kill her. If you look through the history of murders this situation often ends up being the motive. An excessively controlling man feels that he is losing his wife or ex-wife and in a fit of rage murders her as the ultimate act of control. She complained to the police but there was not much they could do. After several months of this going on the police checked her vehicle and found a cell phone behind the dashboard. The ex-husband had purchased a cell phone with GPS surveillance, hooked it up so that it's battery was charged by the car's battery and set the cell phone to silent answer. At any time he could call the cell phone and unless she was out for a long walk he would know exactly where she was and could even listen in on conversations going on in the car.

Unfortunately, your own cell phone can be used against you in a similar fashion if you are not careful. All it takes is for someone else to get a hold of your portable phone for about 5 minutes without you knowing about it. They can go on the Internet, register your phone with a cell phone GPS surveillance service and pay for it with their own credit card. All of this can happen without you knowing about it. The service will send several messages to your phone right away notifying you that you are being tracked but if the person erases those messages you will never know they set up GPS surveillance on you.

This GPS surveillance technology is not just for cell phones. It is showing up in a variety of portable electronic devices. It appears that watches will be the next big item to integrate GPS surveillance and tracking. Even today you can buy any of a dozen or more Timex watches that have integrated GPS tracking and surveillance. But along with this incredible micro technology goes a huge legal problem.
